1,000
Spiders Album |
|
These are being made for the House
of 1,000 Spiders at the Fall Back Festival
in downtown San Diego 2009. A few may end
up in my collection <g>
You'll find these guys in the
William Heath Davis House.
Click here for info about the festival.
This page will essentually be a
photo album for the group.
Who knows where it will end!

First
one
No papier
mache legs added. The egg was painted black, covered
with black yarn. The legs are all yarn so they're floppy
and can be arranged any which way. He could be
hung from fishing line and the breeze would make his
legs look like they're moving.
|
Second
one
Powdered
yellow dye was added to the paste before it was added to
the pulp. When it dried, it was finished with Varathane.
|
|
Number
Three
He was painted
green, but I didn't like how it looked so I gave it a
wash of the same green paint with a bit of black added
and a lot of water. |
Cookie
With his little cocked head and
wistful expression, he looks like he's asking,
"Got a cookie?"

Susan
This brown guy didn't work too well
so I made him orange and green and named HER Susan after
the friend who picked the colors

|

Jeremy
This brown one became green and
yellow by order of friend Jeremy. Amazing how the
personality changes.

Homer

This guy will be polymer clay. Here
he is with a base layer of clay. The legs were made
first and baked. A wad of foil was scrunched into a ball
for the body.
|
A smaller ball of foil is the head.
A snake of clay goes around all the legs, then smoothed
so they stay (hopefully) in place. A
snake of clay around the neck anchors the head. A dab of
TLS here and there helps the raw clay attach to the
baked clay.
Everything is smoothed, legs
adjusted then fingers crossed while he bakes.
This scrap clay is actually a pretty
good spidery color IMHO. If the color works after
baking, he may be done. If not, I have some green clay
waiting to cover him. A lot depends on how strong the
legs are.
Homer was modeled after a picture of
a common house spider. House...home..Homer. |

California Weirdo Spider

Just pipe cleaners, a bit o' papier
mache, paint and googly eyes.
All of the spiders above now have
googly eyes too btw. |

August 15
 |
These guys be very silly. But as I
started playing with one, he needed friends. If they
don't want them at the Gaslamp Quarter, I'll adopt them. |
 |
Some more of the first bunch |
 |
 |
|
These guys are fun to make and the
color combos are endless. If I wasn't such a color
addict, I could have made them for a lot less but spent
$20 to make 24 spiders with some supplies left over. If
I'd stuck to plain black chenille stems and using bits
of leftover paints I already had, I could have done it
for about $16. (If I'd had the right coupons, for 40
percent less) |
