| Inspired by Mary Engelbreit "Life
is just a chair of bowlies"
I was trying to venture into brighter, deeper colors with this kaleidoscope cane. I love them, but am afraid at times to use them. I have to make this my mantra:all colors lose impact when reduced. |
Butterfly turned into
kaleidoscope This one started as a butterfly cane until I realized I hadn't mixed enough color. So I smooshed it into a triangle and came up with an unusual cane. New technique maybe? Too bad. I think it would have made a beautiful butterfly. Going on the list of "Using samples for future projects". |
These two are the result of me staring
at my computer wallpaper too long. It was a Star Wheel and I thought it
would make a cool cane. I was disappointed in the results, but I didn't
have all the colors I wanted, so there you are. There are actually two
canes within the final cane.
I had to see how far I could go with this. It was a good-sized cane, so I had some room to play with it. It seems to work well as a circle or a square. All pieces are about 1 1/2" across |

Adding yellow to the corners and in the center really added interest. |
What I learned: To mix more background color than you think you'll need. Much more. If you don't use it all, you can always use it to cover bases of scrap clay for your beads. |
What
I learned
If you have a really good idea, and don't have the colors you need, wait until you can get them. Make notes of what you are doing and STOP. Then again, most people like this pattern a lot. I keep thinking of batik style bedspreads. Ooohhmmm |

Here is a cane that I wish I had made bigger. I know, the "Great Cane Rule" again. But inspiration took over and I had to get it made before I forgot. Good news is I saved one of the ends off the triangle before reducing and making it into the kaleidoscope so I can attempt to duplicate it when I have more clay. I love Skinner blends and shading of all types. Here I indulged my love of cool colors. | If you are really jazzed about the idea, and you don't have enough clay, take a slice of the original triangle for future use (before you reduce it). Leave it big enough to see the detail. |
