beadyeyedbrat     Hava's Ghosts

Do I make Halloween stuff all year round? These were made at a friend's play clay day on January 3, 2009! Whether I'm rubbing off on Hava or she got the inspiration elsewhere, she made these for Christmas presents in 2008. Here she shows us how she made them.

Decide what colors you want for the stripes around the bottom. Hava picked two colors - red & yellow - just folded it back on itself so there was a thick red stripe with thin yellow stripes on either side.
The strip with rough edges trimmed.
Hava uses a square brass rod. It's really good for when you need an absolutely straight edge
Use the metal ruler as a cutting guide to get a nice thin slice of the stripes. If you don't get an even piece, move the ruler back and cut a new one.
Strip is all ready for adorning. The straighter the strip, the neater the stripe.
Using the Ateco circle cutters, take out the largest, third largest and smallest.
Roll out a sheet of white clay slightly larger than the largest cutter.

This shows how small these guys are.

(I tried this with 2" ornaments and the clay didn't drape as well. It worked, but the ghost definitely has a round head.)

Lay the sheet of white clay on your work surface and smooth out any wrinkles. Lay the third largest cutter on it, cutting side up. Lay your colored stripe around the outside edge of the circle cutter, gently pressing it into the clay as it curves around

Use the largest cutter to cut a circle around the outside edge of the stripes. Press down to cut all the way through the clay.

(I removed the excess clay before removing the cutter)

This Kemper cutter fits over the top of the ornament perfectly. Use it to punch a hole as close to the exact center of the circle as you can.
Now take a smaller cutter and punch two eyes beneath the circle. Practice will show you how close they need to be.
Remove the bits you punched out.
Add a line of cyanoacrylate (super glue/krazy glue) around the base of the top bit of the ornament [is that top bit called a stem?] and lay the clay on top of it. Press it down gently to make sure it holds, so the hole doesn't stretch as you work with it.
Pleat the circle all around, adjusting as you like to make it ghost-like. Pinch lightly to avoid sharp edges.
All pleated. Look at my personality! Now turn that smallest cutter upside down and put me on it. Bake at manufacturer's recommended temp for at least 15 minutes.

Here's what Thomas and I did

These are what we used. They were bought at a dollar store. They're only about an inch across.

The Choir

Hava's is the white one in center front, third one in with the red eyes.  Hers is white, ours are pearl and metallic.
