Cutting him open and giving him clothes.

~Voting IS NOW CLOSED~

This is what we picked. I'll bake the shell
sometime in the next 24 hrs.
Any advice is welcome!
Here's our progress:
Naked
Lined Shell
Now to figure out where to cut it..

Cut open 04-10-01.
What has worked for me so far:
This isn't a river rock, it's a desert rock, so it's not as smooth. I needed no release agent for it, in fact, I had trouble keeping the clay in one place long enough to smooth it!
When deciding where to cut it open, I turned it over and over in my hand. I don't know, maybe I was hoping IT would tell ME. See, you have to think about how to get the shell off in one piece.
I saw a seam that wasn't totally smooth, so I kinda followed that line. I used an Xacto knife to score a line first, then made a cut all the way around with the NuBlade. It didn't budge! The shell was thicker than I'd expected even though the slices were rolled to a #3 on the pasta machine.
I had to go around it several times, then use some real pressure to cut all the way through, losing some bits around the whole perimeter.
Next time it will be cut ONCE and cut DEEP.
Using a needle tool and the Xacto knife, I began to go along the perimiter of the cut, loosening bit by bit. The top just popped off, but the bottom took a little longer.
For the next step, we pick from these pieces of clay.
This will the -outside- of the purse.
Some of the scans are of work I've already done and can copy on the purse.

*the lines you see are where the clay stuck to the scanner glass.
**So many of you have asked how I made this that I'm flattered.  It's in the Polymer Clay Central's new Cyclopedia. You may be surprised how it started! If you look at the first picture, you can see how it looked pre-bake and pre-Pearl Ex.

NOTE: If any of you have been claying along at home and have made your own rock purse, please send me the file so I can upload it with our "community" purse.

After this we will be ready for the finishing elements. This will be where you get to vote for the last time. I sure hope this turns out!
What advice do you have for me now?

Hi again -

So far so gorgeous! :) Okay, my first choice for outer covering would be #5 - and if it's relevant at all, my second would be #4.  (Some very beautiful options, btw - was hard to pick )
