beadyeyedbrat My Journey Through Polymer Clay 2

Sorta Mokume Gane Egg FirstTranslucent Cane Mixed Techniques Egg
I've followed instructions to make a Mokume Gane sandwich, using pearly colors rather than the expected metals.
I had some metallic green and my own favorite green clay recipe, so I mixed them together. This went together with the translucent, -but- I didn't have much, so I also made a blue layer and a magenta layer. Underneath the slices is a variegated white-green layer rolled to number 6.
Translucent FIMO has different properties than regular clay in my experience. Most of them have darkened, so every project is a surprise. I used FIMO almost exclusively, so perhaps that doesn't happen with all translucent clays.

The whole shebang was covered with white Pearl Ex.

Interesting factoid:
Clay does not like to stick to Pearl Ex but Pearl Ex likes to stick on clay.  You have to persuade it, sometimes not so gently.

I still had a couple of eggs blown and ready after the one I used for the Mokume Gane egg, but other things captured my attention for the next couple of weeks.
After a trip to The Clay Factory of Escondido, and locating some stuff in my Box 'O Sparklies, I tried this one.

This is an all-Premo egg. I took some purple clay and added pearl and marbled it. Then I added a little translucent. It was pretty, but this foil that my buddy, Jami, had given me winked at me from the Box. I had no idea how to use it and after three unsuccessful tries, it was off to Glass Attic for clues.

What I learned:
When they say paper-thin slices, they mean it. Otherwise, you will be braying, smoothing and sanding your little hands off. This egg has taken 2 hours of adding slices and smoothing so far and it's still not totally smooth. For me, it has to be -very- smooth because I won't be able to do much sanding.
Also, since you are using translucents, the thinner the slices, the better the pattern shows.
I went back and put some tiny slices in to help fill some gaps.

All cured.
Not wanting to admit to Jami that I didn't know what this stuff was, I gathered from the info at GA that it was Jones Tones foil or something similar. And that I was trying to put the foil on from the wrong side.
Heat, huh? Well, I have no heat gun, but I did have a cup of hot coffee, so I laid the clay and foil upside the cup and viola! A little came off. The more I rubbed the warm clay/foil, the more came off. It looked very cool with the broken pattern on the purple, so I just stuck the foil on randomly, warmed it and burnished. I used a knitting needle, the dull side of my NuBlade and a needle tool.

This foil stuff is fun to play with! Cut small pieces at a time when you first start out and don't be afraid of it.
